Lune - The Art of Craft
At Lune, our vision is to seamlessly integrate the joy of playing and creating music into your home environment. We believe that musical equipment shouldn't be relegated to garages or closets but should complement your living space. This philosophy drove us to reimagine the design and manufacturing process of music equipment, resulting in the creation of Lune - a product that marries acoustical excellence with aesthetic appeal and inclusivity.
The Genesis of Lune's Design
Traditional music equipment often prioritize function over form, leading to bulky, unattractive units that clash with home decor. Our vision for designing Lune was simple: create a musical device that feels right at home in your living space. To achieve this, we began to draw inspiration from the world of interior design, particularly furniture and kitchen cabinets. We realized that wood, a natural and versatile material, would be the perfect foundation for Lune's design blending seamlessly into your home environment, combining great sound with a look that complements your existing furnishings.
Our search for a manufacturing partner who could bring this vision to life led us to Northern Contours, specialists in high-end cabinetry known for their commitment to sustainability. Over a year of collaborative effort went into refining Lune's design to ensure it was not only beautiful and sustainable but also suitable for large-scale production.
Northern Contours was founded in 1992 in Fergus Falls, Minnesota by Mike Rone & Duaine Miranowski with the goal of bringing “membrane pressing” to the US market. With its start in Europe in the 1980s, membrane pressing was the new, cost-effective way to manufacture. With a talented and dedicated team of more than 450 employees at its core, their roots have spread from Fergus Falls, MN to manufacturing facilities in Corbin, Kentucky, Mesa, Arizona, and most recently, London, Ontario.
How is Lune made?
Material Selection: Lune Explorer Edition is crafted from 100% recycled engineered core, a versatile engineered wood product known for its strength, consistency, and smooth surface. The wood used comes from sustainably managed forests in Northern USA and Canada, reflecting our commitment to environmental responsibility.
Routing: The manufacturing process begins with routing, where the engineered core sheets are shaped into Lune's distinctive panels and frames. Northern Contours employs a variety of router bits to achieve Lune's signature soft edges, designed to be inviting and harmonious with home decor. Our crescent moon speaker panel design is intricately routed using different-sized bits for each hole, showcasing the precision of this process.
Thermofoil Application: After routing, the pieces undergo a thermofoil wrapping process. This involves applying a layer of 3D Laminate (3DL) material under high heat and 4 atmospheres of pressure. Incorporating 3DL technology offers several advantages:
It allows for an infinite variety of designs and finishes
The process makes Lune naturally antimicrobial
It provides superior durability compared to traditional laminates
The parts are meticulously sprayed with glue by hand to ensure even coverage before being pressed with the thermofoil. Excess material is then trimmed and sanded, resulting in perfectly finished Lune components.
Caring for Your Lune
Coating the surface with 3D Laminate (3DL) ensures your Lune is simple to clean with standard household products. The same material that goes into making Lune is approved for hospital room surfaces, ensuring the highest standards of cleanliness and safety. This means you don't have to worry about spills or messes; Lune's surface is easy to clean and maintain. Plus, its antimicrobial properties provide extra protection.
Quality Assurance & Testing
Our commitment to quality is evident in our rigorous testing procedures. The 3DL-covered MDF undergoes tests simulating 4 months of exposure to direct sunlight and high humidity. We then evaluate for color fading, glue strength, and moisture resistance to ensure longevity and durability.
Sustainability in our choices
Our collaboration with Northern Contours goes beyond their precision and craftsmanship—it’s rooted in their dedication to sustainability, making them the perfect fit for Lune. At Lune, sustainability isn't just a checkbox or a responsibility statement; it's embedded in every decision we make, from selecting partners to choosing materials.
